Earth Day Planting at Rutgers University-Camden

Earth Day Planting at Rutgers University-Camden

On Thursday May 21st, 2016, Sustainable Camden County partnered with Rutgers University-Camden to engage students in an Earth Day planting. The Sustainable Camden County team created a design for their residence hall using mostly native plants to improve the ecological value and reduce storm-water runoff at the site. Sustainable Camden County also donated annuals grown by the Master Gardeners at the community greenhouse.

Rutgers University pulled together staff and students to prepare and plant the site during Earth Week. Students learned about planting “plugs” of plants and contributed to beautifying their living space while enjoying the activity together. Students were active in both planting and watering the plants and will play a role in its maintenance. One student created a small vegetable and herb garden with the help of volunteers in this space during the event and is encouraging Rutgers Camden students to learn and enjoy edible gardening.

Overall the project was successful and we look forward to seeing the space grow over time.

Happy Earth Day!
