July 2017 – Sustainable Champion – Anthony Farinelli/Bellmawr Public School District

Anthony is the Principal at Bell Oaks Middle School.  He is responsible for spearheading a team of staff that has taken up the mantle of sustainability and passed it on to their student body.  They have embraced these efforts extremely well.

All three schools in the District are now registered for the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program and are working toward certification.

Obesity rates have more than tripled in children over the past few decades. Healthier schools have been shown to improve students’ nutrition and physical activity habits, thereby positively impacting students’ attention span, class participation, and self-esteem.  One of the District’s biggest accomplishments so far has been in the field of health and wellness.  Dana Litwornia, their Instructional Technology teacher, has done an amazing job coordinating the wellness arm of their overall Green Team efforts.

The District has also switched over to using all Green Seal certified cleaning products and has added energy efficiency controls on its HVAC equipment.   They have already developed gardens on their sites, but will soon add greenhouses, portable indoor gardens and hydroponics down the road.

We are proud to recognize Anthony Farinelli and the Bellmawr Public School District as our Camden County Sustainability Champion for the month of July.
