April 2016 – Sustainability Champion Ron Smith

This month’s Sustainability Champion is Ron Smith of Haddonfield Memorial High School.

Ron has been teaching Environmental Sciences for over 20 years makes it a requirement for his juniors and seniors to complete an “Improvement Plan for the Environment” each year.
His students have focused on district-wide composting, water conservation, environmental education in the elementary schools and reducing fertilizer usage in the Borough.

Class projects have included counting and rescuing trapped horseshoe crabs in Fortescue, a restoration project in Hopkins Pond, and installing rain gardens at the high school.
Smith is also a biodiversity, Earth and environmental science instructor at Drexel University and he leads the Life Science Field Training Institute for educators during the summer.

Ron and his students have been instrumental in helping Haddonfield achieve the Silver level of certification through the Sustainable Jersey program.
Those that know him say that every single one of his students cites him as their inspiration and a number have gone on to study environmental sciences in college as a direct result of the encouragement he has provided.

We are proud to recognize Ron Smith as our Camden County Sustainability Champions for the month of April.
